ENJOY VOLUNTEERING?
Do you have 2 or 3 hours to spare on Saturdays?
Consider yourself a reasonably skilled reader?
You could help us enable education-needy 5-12 year-olds, (mostly from multiple cultures, and impoverished families) to swiftly master literacy and enjoy education.
Real Action is a community-based educational charity centred in London, close to Queen’s Park and the Ladbroke Grove area (and gradually spreading widely).
For over twenty-five years with our flagship Butterfly programme, we have been teaching disadvantaged children to develop their enjoyable command of reading, writing and comprehension. They love it! The majority end up as university students, their parents inform us. Wonderful!
We currently have a long waiting list of children who would like to join our classes, but we need more regular volunteers. Might you like to help us teach children how to read?
Experience is not necessary – since we use a fast-acting structured and scripted (phonics based) method suitable for children with zero literacy to about reading age twelve. We provide ongoing free training to help you develop into a confident Butterfly literacy teacher.
If you can commit 2 hours on term-time Saturdays, you can start as a classroom assistant or by observing a few sessions.
Volunteering with us is a fantastic way to gain experience working with and helping children. Our volunteers typically say they find it extremely rewarding and provides a welcome break from what they normally do (whether at university, school, in the community or at work) during the week.
